The classic conflict of the goddess as source of fertility versus morality. Why is history so conflicted about this power nature bestows to the female, creation on all levels is basically looking beyond immediate needs and requires a confidence about the value of life. It is what makes the static power structure of Chistian mythology feel so dead. Why does the cult of Marianism (worship of Mother Mary) persist in Catholicism, because of the inate need of it in our personal experience - men do not beget men regardless of the Biblical tradition. I enjoy any mythology that embraces joy of life - try George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman on this issue.
